No one can escape the seductive power of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. Orchestra and violinist enchant listeners with the most beautiful melodies. Tonight, the Residentie Orkest and South Korean star Bomsori take up that challenge. Add a great symphonic work by Price plus the swing of Gershwin and the magic is complete.

Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto is among the most beloved concertos in classical music. One of the most important violinists of the nineteenth century, Joseph Joachim, called the work the "heart jewel among violin concertos. Now South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim plays Mendelssohn's masterpiece around the world. In 2023, she made British audiences at the BBC Proms "stare back" with her version of the Violin Concerto, according to The Times.

The Residentie Orkest pairs Mendelssohn with two American compositions: George Gershwin's swinging An American in Paris and Florence Price's Third Symphony. As an African-American female composer, she had to fight hard for a place in the concert halls. Her Third symphony is considered one of her most modern creations. You can hear subtle references to Wagner, Dvorák and Shostakovich.
